Jodie: Growth and Independence

Jodie: Growth and Independence

“I love living here because it lets me be independent,” Jodie says proudly. “I can book my own MetroLift rides and even cook entire meals for my roommates!” This statement encapsulates the essence of Jodie’s experience—a journey towards self-reliance and personal achievement that touches every aspect of her daily life.

Jodie’s journey at Pursuit Center exemplifies how dedicated support and personal determination can lead to remarkable growth. Since joining our program in 2016 at age 22, Jodie has blossomed into a confident and independent young woman who approaches life with enthusiasm and purpose.

As a resident in our Residential Services program, Jodie shares a home with two roommates, an arrangement that has significantly contributed to her independence. She actively participates in community activities, such as “Take out Thursdays,” and has discovered a passion for cooking. Recently, she prepared an entire meal for her roommates, including homemade potato salad and mac and cheese, showcasing both her culinary skills and her desire to care for others.

Jodie’s days are filled with purpose and joy. She enthusiastically participates in our Adult Day Program, particularly enjoying field trips with her friends. Her involvement in the Coffee Cart program, where she takes orders and makes coffee, exhibiting her growing skills and confidence. Jodie also attends on campus Bloom Fitness classes, reflecting her commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

Pursuit Center has been instrumental in Jodie’s personal growth, teaching her valuable social skills. As she puts it, she “learns to be nice to everyone in day program.” This sentiment reflects her kind nature and willingness to grow, as well as her efforts to become more outgoing. Jodie has formed meaningful relationships within our community, speaking fondly of her favorite staff member, Debra Smith, whom she describes as “nice, calm, and helpful.”

Debra Smith, our Direct Care Specialist, has observed Jodie’s growth firsthand. She shares, “Jodie knows herself and is unapologetic about it. It’s been incredible to watch her become more confident and outgoing over the years. She’s always eager to help, whether it’s with a roommate or another participant.”

Jodie’s journey towards greater confidence is perhaps best exemplified by her decision to join a choir at Congregation Emanu El. She attends weekly practices and recently performed her first solo—a significant step that demonstrates her growing self-assurance and willingness to step out of her comfort zone.

When asked about her experience, Jodie beams, “I’m happy with my life here. The Center for Pursuit has really helped me grow. I’ve made great friends like Lillian and Meredith, and I even had my first solo in choir this year!”

Outside of Pursuit Center, Jodie is a proud Houstonian and an avid fan of the city’s sports teams, Astros, Texans, and Rockets. She cherishes her role as a sister and aunt to two nieces. Her love for animals, especially her three Cavalier dogs—Louie, Oliver, and Ivy—adds another layer of joy to her life. Jodie’s fondness for reading, particularly Pokémon and Goosebumps books, speaks to her curious and intellectual nature.

Looking forward, Jodie aspires to join the workforce, with dreams of working in a library or at her favorite fast-food restaurant, Chick-fil-A. Her growing confidence and efforts to become more outgoing will undoubtedly serve her well as she works towards this goal. At Pursuit Center, we stand ready to support her on this journey whenever she feels prepared to take that step.

Jodie’s increasing independence, expanding social circle, and growing self-confidence all point to a bright future. We are proud to be a part of Jodie’s journey and look forward to supporting her continued growth and success as she becomes more confident and outgoing with each passing day.
